Inside and Outside the House: Publishers & Freelance Editors

With the continued gigification of the publishing industry, the role of freelance editors continues to grow. Nara Monteiro has gained valuable insights as a freelance editor, a leader in a collective of freelance editors as Room magazine’s former publisher, and an in-house editor at TouchWood Editions. Based on this experience, Nara will talk us through the common sticking points between publishers and freelance editors, best practices on both sides of the editorial divide, and big-picture takeaways as the editorial landscape continues to evolve.

Nara Monteiro (they/them) is a Brazilian-Canadian editor, writer, and nerd based in Tkaronto (Toronto). They are the editorial coordinator at TouchWood Editions, a managing editor at Augur magazine, and an editor at Room magazine. After hours, you can find Nara reading in the woods.

Annual General Meeting

In addition to Nara’s presentation, we will be holding our annual general meeting and elections to fill vacancies on the 2025–2026 Editors BC branch executive. While most of the current Editors BC executive volunteers plan to stay on, there are co-chair openings available. Joining the executive as a co-chair is an excellent way for BC members to ease into volunteering, as the incumbents provide guidance and support.

Open branch executive positions for the upcoming season are as follows:

  • Communications and social media co-chair: promotes the association and the branch to the public by coordinating Editors BC’s social media presence and by ensuring a presence at public events organized by Editors Canada and other groups
  • Professional development co-chair: plans and hosts the branch’s professional development seminars
  • Publications co-chair: oversees the day-to-day operation of the West Coast Editor blog, including organizing and managing the posting schedule, assigning content, coordinating proofreading and editing, and posting content

The executive meets monthly via Zoom, usually for an hour. However, we hold at least two longer meetings (2–3 hours), usually in January and April.

Please note that student affiliate members are welcome to hold any executive position except for branch chair, co-secretary, communications and social media chair, and treasurer. Editors Canada bylaws limit those positions to regular members only.

We strongly encourage members throughout the province to join the executive!

Contact Fendi Liu at volunteercoordinator@editorsbc.ca if you are interested in volunteering for any of the above positions.

Note: Editors BC will record this meeting. Editors Canada members have up to 30 days to request a link to the recording by emailing coordinator@editorsbc.ca.

Keep up to date on Editors BC events and editing-related news and articles by subscribing to our blog, West Coast Editor, at editorsbc.ca.
